Silicon dioxide is a naturally occurring mineral commonly found in the earth's crust, usually in quartz and various organisms. In nature, plants also contain silicon dioxide. It is common for water to contain silicon dioxide. Thus, the life of mankind is closely linked to silicon dioxide.
The American Journal of Epidemiology published the results of a 15-year follow-up study, which found that higher silicon dioxide levels in water help reduce the risk of dementia. The research indicated that adding a daily 10 mg dose of silicon dioxide to drinking water reduced dementia risk by 11%. Ingesting silicon dioxide is not harmful.
Silicon dioxide has long been used in cake flour, seasoning powder, and coffee creamer as an anti-caking agent, in beer and wine as a clarifying agent, and often in many vitamin and supplement products in capsule and tablet forms. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies silicon dioxide as a food additive permitted for direct addition to food for human consumption. The amount of silicon dioxide used as an anti-caking agent is very small and will not cause any adverse side-effects.
